Lexmark Printers

Lexmark model names are a code, and reading it makes this range much easier to navigate. The first letter is colour: M for monochrome, C for colour. The second letter is function: S for single-function printing, X for multifunction with scan and copy. So an MS prints black only, a CX prints colour and scans.

The suffixes describe connectivity and features: d for duplex two-sided printing, w for wireless, n for network, a for an automatic document feeder.

Monochrome Printers

Most dealership printing is black text on forms, so this is where the volume sits.

  • MS431dw, up to 42 ppm, compact, wired and wireless
  • MS531dw, up to 46 ppm, toner yields to 28,400 pages
  • MS631dw, up to 50 ppm, yields to 31,000
  • MS821dn, 55 ppm, built for mid-sized operations
  • MS823dn, 65 ppm with a first page in 4.2 seconds
  • MS825dn, 70 ppm with a first page in 4 seconds, for the highest volumes

Colour Printers

Colour matters less than dealerships assume. Repair orders, deal paperwork and parts invoices are all mono. Where colour earns its place is customer-facing output: vehicle brochures, trade presentations, marketing collateral printed in-house.

  • CS331dw, 26 ppm, compact with built-in Wi-Fi, the entry point
  • CS431dw, 26 ppm with a 2.8in colour touch screen
  • CS531dw, 35 ppm in both colour and mono
  • CS632dwe, up to 40 ppm for mid-size workgroups

Multifunction: Print, Scan, Copy, Fax

A dealership scans constantly, from signed deal documents into the DMS to insurance paperwork and title copies. A multifunction unit at the right desk removes a lot of walking.

The MX431adw is the mono option at 42 ppm with double-sided automatic scanning and a touch screen. In colour, the CX331adwe runs 26 ppm with a flatbed scanner and ADF, and the CX532adwe adds speed at 35 ppm with print, copy, scan and fax in one device.

Worth noting when comparing: the colour CX331adwe costs less than the mono MX431adw, because the mono unit is considerably faster. If scanning matters more than speed, the colour multifunction is the better value.

Choosing by Position, Not by Budget

Match the machine to where it stands rather than buying at the top of the range.

  • Service write-up desk: speed and first-page-out matter most, because a customer is waiting. The MS823dn or MS825dn.
  • Parts counter: steady throughput, mono, reliability. The MS531dw or MS631dw.
  • Finance office: scanning as much as printing. The MX431adw.
  • Sales floor or marketing: colour for customer-facing material. The CS531dw or CS632dwe.
  • Back office: batch printing where speed is not urgent. The MS431dw.

Budget for the Consumables

The printer is the smaller cost over its life. Higher-yield toner cartridges cut cost per page substantially, and the imaging unit and fuser are separate consumables with their own replacement cycles. FAQ

What do the Lexmark model letters mean?

First letter is colour: M for monochrome, C for colour. Second is function: S for single-function, X for multifunction with scan and copy. The suffixes cover features, with d for duplex, w for wireless, n for network and a for an automatic document feeder. So a CX532adwe is a colour multifunction with duplex, wireless and an ADF.

Do we need colour?

For core dealership paperwork, no. Repair orders, deal documents and parts invoices are mono, and a monochrome printer costs less to buy and run. Colour is worth having at one position for customer-facing material, which is what the CS331dw is sized for.

How much speed do we actually need?

It depends whether someone is waiting. At a service write-up desk, first-page-out time matters more than pages per minute, which is why the MS825dn quotes 4 seconds. A back office printing in batches gets no benefit from that, and the MS431dw does the same job for a third of the price.

Single-function or multifunction?

Count how often people walk to a scanner. Dealerships scan signed documents into the DMS constantly, so a multifunction at the finance desk or write-up station saves real time. Elsewhere, a single-function printer is faster and cheaper for the same print volume.

Why is the faster printer sometimes cheaper?

Different product families are priced differently, and promotions move individual models. If two printers look mismatched on price against their speed, call us before ordering and we will confirm current pricing and which is the better fit for your volume. It is worth the call on a machine at this level.

What else should we budget for?

Toner, the imaging unit, and eventually the fuser, plus a 550-sheet paper tray if the standard input will not carry a day's printing. Higher-yield cartridges reduce cost per page considerably, so ask which cartridges your chosen model accepts before deciding between two machines.
