Choosing a License Plate Screw

Thread type comes first. Domestic vehicles generally take SAE #14 x 3/4in screws such as the slotted hex head or slotted truss head. Most Japanese, Korean, and European vehicles take 6mm metric, including the metric slotted hex head at 6mm x 16mm, the slotted pan head at 6mm x 20mm, and the hex flange head at 6mm x 12mm.

Head style affects how the screw sits and how it drives. Truss and pan heads are low profile and sit flat against the plate. Washer heads spread load across a wider bearing surface, and the flange head builds that washer into the screw so there is no separate part to lose. Dual-drive heads accept more than one bit: the duo-drive truss head takes both Phillips and square-drive, and the Phillips hex washer head gives a second option on the same screw.

Coating decides how it looks in two years. Black E-Coat is electrocoated and outperforms standard zinc outdoors, Dacromet zinc-flake gives the highest corrosion resistance, and yellow dichromate adds protection over zinc with a gold finish. On a fastener at bumper height in road salt, this is the spec that matters.

Dealer Plates and Test Drives

Dealer plates move between vehicles constantly, so they need mounting that leaves no marks. How do I mount a dealer plate without drilling?
